ChatGPT Ads
ChatGPT Ads: how advertising in ChatGPT works, and whether businesses in Nice, Cannes or Monaco should use it
ChatGPT Ads, OpenAI's ad platform, has been open in France since August 2026: how it works, targeting, access and which Riviera businesses should try it.
ChatGPT Ads is advertising inside ChatGPT: ads labeled “sponsored” that appear below the assistant’s answer, and that any French business has been able to buy on its own since late August 2026. For a hotel in Cannes or a real estate agency in Monaco, it’s a new paid channel next to Google Ads, with a fairly different targeting logic. Here’s how it works, what OpenAI promises, and who it’s worth it for right now.
What exactly is ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI’s ad platform. A business pays for an ad (a headline, a short text, a link to its site) to show up when a ChatGPT conversation touches on what it sells. The ad never blends into the answer text: it sits underneath, in a separate unit, marked “sponsored”.
The timeline is recent and moved fast:
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| January 16, 2026 | OpenAI publishes its advertising principles |
| February 9, 2026 | First test in the United States, Free and Go plans |
| August 24, 2026 | Ads start serving in 31 European markets, France included |
| August 31, 2026 | Self-serve Ads Manager (beta) opens in those 31 markets |
| October 2026 | New measurement integrations, “Negative Phrases”, a visual format tested in the US |
In late August, only partner agencies and OpenAI’s sales team could buy inventory in Europe. A week later the self-serve tool opened, as reported by Blog du Modérateur. According to the same source, the $200,000 minimum commitment required during the US pilot dropped to $50,000 and was then removed.
Where do the ads appear, and who sees them?
Ads show below ChatGPT’s answer, visually separated and labeled. Only Free and Go accounts see them. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers get no ads, according to OpenAI’s help page on ads.
Other exclusions matter to an advertiser because they shrink the real audience:
- accounts identified as belonging to minors (OpenAI also uses age prediction);
- temporary chats and the ChatGPT Atlas browser;
- sensitive topics such as health, mental health and politics, and political ads are banned outright.
A free user can also switch to an ad-free version in exchange for lower limits (fewer messages, no image generation or deep research), as Trending Topics reported.
How does targeting work without keywords?
There are no keywords to buy. The advertiser describes the conversation contexts it wants to appear in, and the system matches the ongoing conversation against the ad text and the landing page. For a yacht charter company, that looks less like “yacht rental Monaco” and more like a description such as: “people planning a trip to the Riviera who want a crewed day at sea”.
In Europe, targeting is contextual only for now. OpenAI’s help center says plainly that personalized ads are not available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland at launch. In practice, the ad depends on the topic of the current conversation, approximate location, device type, time of day and language. Chat history and memory are not used. OpenAI plans to add personalization later, with explicit consent, but no European date has been announced, and several German data protection authorities raised concerns in early October.
Since October, eligible advertisers also get “Negative Phrases”: phrases describing contexts where they don’t want to appear. Handy for a luxury brand that would rather stay out of conversations about cheap deals.
What OpenAI promises on privacy and answer independence
OpenAI set out its commitments in its approach to advertising (January 2026). The two that matter most to a business owner:
- Ads don’t influence answers. ChatGPT answers the same way whether there’s an ad below or not. Paying won’t get you cited in the answer.
- Conversations stay private. Advertisers only receive aggregate statistics (views, clicks), never the content of chats, and OpenAI says it doesn’t sell user data.
You can stay skeptical about how well these promises hold over time, but they already have a practical consequence: paid placement and organic visibility are two separate circuits, and each needs its own work.
How can an advertiser get access today?
In France there are two routes: go through an agency or technology partner, or open an account yourself at ads.openai.com. Self-serve is still in beta and limited to certain advertiser categories. You have to get your business verified and add a payment method before launching anything.
What we know about the tool, per Blog du Modérateur (September 1, 2026):
- a three-level structure: campaign, ad group, ad;
- buying on CPM (per impression) or CPC (per click), plus optimization toward a goal such as conversions;
- no minimum budget on self-serve;
- conversion tracking through a pixel and a Conversions API, with no native CRM connector.
On pricing, I’m cautious. Blog du Modérateur cites a market cost per click of $3 to $5, but OpenAI publishes no rate card and costs vary by sector. Treat it as a ballpark. Same goes for the visual format announced in October: it’s being tested with US advertisers, and nothing has been confirmed for France.
One technical point not to miss: OpenAI’s pixel must be wired to your cookie banner. In France, the CNIL requires prior consent for trackers that aren’t strictly necessary, and an advertising pixel is one of them.
GEO or ChatGPT Ads: getting cited or paying to appear?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means getting ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini to cite your business inside their answer, because they understand and trust it. I explained how that works in why your business doesn’t show up in ChatGPT. ChatGPT Ads places you below the answer, for a fee, without changing what the AI says.
| GEO (organic) | ChatGPT Ads (paid) | |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Inside the answer | Below the answer, marked “sponsored” |
| Cost | Time and content, no cost per click | Ad budget, per click or per impression |
| Lead time | Several weeks to several months | A few days once the account is approved |
| Audience | All users, paid plans included | Free and Go accounts only |
| Durability | The effect stays when you stop | Stops with the budget |
The two work together for a simple reason. Say a tourist asks ChatGPT for a seafood restaurant with a terrace on the port of Nice. If the AI cites you and your ad sits right below, you hold two spots on the same screen. If you only have the ad and the answer recommends three competitors, your unit comes after three recommendations that look neutral. So I recommend building the organic foundations first, then putting budget on the conversations where a conversion is worth a lot.
To see where you stand organically, measuring your visibility in ChatGPT gives a simple method.
Which businesses in Nice, Cannes and Monaco should consider it?
My rule of thumb: a high average order value, a decision prepared ahead of time (often by talking to an AI) and an offer that’s easy to describe in context. If your customer decides in thirty seconds on Google Maps, advertising in ChatGPT has little to offer you for now.
| Business | My take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel, villa rental (Cannes, Cap d’Antibes, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat) | Worth testing | Stays planned well ahead, conversations like “where to stay during the Film Festival” |
| Luxury real estate agency (Monaco, Cap-Martin, Mont Boron) | Worth testing | High transaction value, buyers comparing neighborhoods with an AI |
| Yacht rental, charter (Port Vauban, Port Hercule, Cannes) | Worth testing | Easy to describe, very high order value |
| Events, weddings, corporate retreats | Worth testing | Projects planned over several exchanges |
| Restaurant | Better wait | Quick decision, Google Maps and your Google listing come first |
| Aesthetic clinic, medical practice | Wait | Health conversations are excluded, and medical ethics rules restrict advertising in France |
| Emergency tradesperson | Wait | Urgent, “near me” searches on Google |
Two nuances for the Riviera. A large share of luxury clients are foreign, and ads only show in countries where ChatGPT Ads is open and to users who aren’t on paid plans. A wealthy client paying for ChatGPT Pro will never see your ad, yet can perfectly well read an answer that cites you. And since self-serve is in beta, some categories aren’t eligible yet: check yours before building a plan.
I work from Nice, but these settings apply to any business in France, and I also do them remotely.
Checklist before launching a ChatGPT Ads campaign
- An up-to-date Google Business Profile. AI engines rely on the web to judge a business, and your listing is part of it. The Google Business Profile guide for Nice covers the settings.
- A site machines can read: Schema.org structured data, consistent details (name, address, phone), fast pages.
- A dedicated landing page. It’s used to match conversations, so it has to say clearly what you sell, where and for whom. A generic homepage performs poorly.
- Conversation contexts written with care, and a list of “Negative Phrases” if your account has access.
- GDPR-compliant conversion tracking: a pixel gated by consent, a server-side Conversions API where possible, and tagged links (for example
utm_source=chatgpt) to isolate this channel in your analytics. - A capped test budget and a review date set in advance, so you decide on real numbers rather than a hunch.
What I offer
The ChatGPT Ads launch package costs €490, delivered in 7 days, ad budget on top. It covers targeting and ads, GDPR-compliant conversion tracking and one month of optimization. I can’t guarantee a cost per click or a sales volume; nobody can on a platform this young. If your business is one of those that should wait, I’ll tell you, and SEO & GEO work will be a better use of your budget.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Ads available in France?
Yes. Ads have been served in France since August 24, 2026, and the self-serve Ads Manager has been open to eligible advertisers since August 31, 2026, still in beta.
Is there a minimum budget to advertise in ChatGPT?
No, not on self-serve according to Blog du Modérateur: the minimum commitment from the US pilot was removed. You set your own budget, per click or per impression.
Does paying for ChatGPT Ads improve my position in ChatGPT’s answers?
No. OpenAI commits that ads don’t influence answers. To be cited in the answer itself, you need GEO.
Are ChatGPT ads personalized in Europe?
Not yet. In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, targeting relies on the current conversation’s context, language, device, time of day and approximate location, with no chat history or memory.
