SEO in Monaco: search and AI visibility for an international clientele

SEO Monaco guide: the .mc domain, hreflang, a Google profile in Monaco or Beausoleil, English-language queries and getting cited by ChatGPT.

10 min read By Anthony Profit

SEO in Monaco plays out on two markets at once: a couple of square kilometres for your Google profile and the local pack, and the whole world for English-language searches typed in London, Milan or Dubai. A Monaco business that wants to rank has to settle questions a company in Nice never faces: whether to use a .mc domain, which language to serve to whom, where the Google profile goes when the office is in Beausoleil, and how to get named by ChatGPT for a query like “best yacht charter broker Monaco”.

I work from Nice for clients on the Riviera, yachting companies among them, and also remotely across France and beyond. This is what I check on an SEO project in Monaco.

Why is SEO in Monaco different from SEO in a French city?

Monaco is a sovereign state. It has its own ISO country code (MC), its own domain extension (.mc) and its own statistics office, IMSEE. Google treats it as a country in its own right, with its own targeting signals.

The population is small and very international. According to IMSEE figures reported by Monaco Tribune in April 2026, the Principality had 38,857 residents at the end of 2025, from 144 nationalities. Monegasques make up 24% of residents, ahead of the French (21.3%), Italians (19.5%) and British (7.9%). So three residents in four are not Monegasque.

On the jobs side, IMSEE’s 2025 employment report says nine in ten private-sector employees work in Monaco without living there. Plenty of “local” searches therefore start in Nice, Menton or Italy, and much of the high-end clientele searches from abroad, often in English.

French is the official language. English and Italian are in everyday business use, and depending on the sector Russian or other languages matter too. A French-only website misses a large share of demand.

Do you need a .mc domain?

The .mc extension is restricted. According to the registry conditions summarised by the registrar Gandi, it is reserved mainly for companies with their head office or an establishment in Monaco, self-employed people authorised to work there, Monegasque associations and owners of a trademark protected in Monaco. You need an extract from the RCI (Monaco’s trade and industry register) or a trademark certificate, and the domain must match the company name or the trademark. A company registered in Beausoleil cannot, in principle, register a .mc.

The choice also has an SEO effect. Google’s documentation on multi-regional sites says a country-code domain is a strong signal that the site targets that country. The .mc extension is not on Google’s short list of country codes treated as generic (.io, .co, .me, .tv…). And since September 2022, Search Console no longer lets you pick a target country for a .com: what remains is hreflang, content and local signals.

OptionSignal sent to GoogleBest for
.mc onlySite aimed at MonacoShops or firms whose clients are mostly residents
.com with FR/EN versionsNo country imposed, targeting by languageYachting, prime real estate, hospitality, global clientele
.mc and .comTwo sites to maintainRarely worth it, unless the brand is already established on both

My view: for a business selling to an international clientele, a .com is the simplest choice. The .mc can reassure local clients and redirect to the main site.

hreflang: fr, en or fr-MC?

hreflang tells Google which version of a page to show depending on the searcher’s language (and optionally country). According to Google’s hreflang documentation, the code combines an ISO 639-1 language with an optional ISO 3166-1 country, so fr-MC is valid. A country code on its own is not, and every version must link to the others or the tags are ignored.

In practice I recommend fr, en and x-default for most Monaco sites. fr-MC only makes sense if you also have a different version for France (prices, legal notices, offer). Creating fr-MC and fr-FR with the same text just duplicates pages. I go into more detail in the guide to multilingual websites on the French Riviera.

Google has no google.mc search domain in its official list, by the way: residents use google.com, google.fr or google.it, and results adapt to their location and language.

Google Business Profile: Monaco, Beausoleil or Cap-d’Ail?

Many companies that work “in Monaco” are based just across the border, in Beausoleil, Cap-d’Ail or Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. For the Google profile, the real address is what counts. The Google Business Profile guidelines are clear on three points:

  • an address rented only to receive mail (a registered office service or virtual office) does not qualify for a profile;
  • a coworking space qualifies only if it carries your signage, receives customers during your stated hours and is staffed by your team during those hours;
  • the profile name must be your real-world name. Adding “Monaco” or “Monte-Carlo” when it is not part of your signage breaks the rules.

A Beausoleil company will therefore have a Beausoleil profile. It can still show up for searches made from Monaco, a few minutes’ walk away, but it will not earn a “98000 Monaco” address through a trick. If you go to your clients (concierge services, onboard services, tradespeople), the service-area business setup, with a hidden address and a service area, is often a better fit.

For businesses genuinely located in the Principality, the district matters. A search from Fontvieille can return different results from one made in Monte-Carlo, La Condamine, Larvotto or Monaco-Ville. Photos of the premises, accurate hours and regular reviews in French and English do more than any naming trick.

Which queries should you target in your sector?

Monaco’s economy concentrates trades where a single client is worth a lot: banking and wealth management, prime real estate, yachting, luxury hotels and restaurants, events. Queries are few, often in English, and closely tied to the calendar.

SectorFrench queriesEnglish queriesPeak moment
Yachtinglocation yacht Monaco, courtier yacht Monacoyacht charter Monaco, superyacht broker MonacoMonaco Yacht Show (23 to 26 September 2026)
Real estateappartement à vendre Monte-Carlo, agence immobilière MonacoMonaco apartment for sale, luxury real estate MonacoAll year

Eventsorganisation soirée Monaco, location terrasse Grand PrixMonaco Grand Prix hospitality, private event MonacoGrand Prix, summer season
Wealth managementfamily office Monaco, gestion de fortune Monacowealth management Monaco, family office MonacoAll year

Search peaks around the Grand Prix and the Monaco Yacht Show need preparing weeks ahead. A terrace-rental page published in race week is too late for Google. On English queries, the competition comes from London, Miami and the big platforms, so the page has to be written for an English-speaking reader, with their phrasing and references.

How do AI assistants answer “best yacht charter broker Monaco”?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, means making a business understandable and quotable for generative engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot. On a high-end English query, these tools offer a short list of names, and they draw them mostly from what third parties say about you.

Ahrefs studied around 75,000 brands in 2025: branded web mentions were the factor most correlated with visibility in AI Overviews (a correlation of 0.664), ahead of links (Ahrefs study). Correlation is not causation, but it matches what I see on luxury queries: AI names the houses that trade press, professional directories, rankings and event sites talk about.

For a Monaco business, that leads to three pieces of work:

  1. Prestigious third-party sources: yachting or property press, Monaco Yacht Show exhibitor pages, professional associations, recognised partners. In my view one mention in a trade outlet outweighs a dozen generic directories.
  2. A consistent entity: same name, address, activity and founder on the website, the Google profile, LinkedIn, registers and directories. Structured data (Organization, LocalBusiness) says the same thing in machine-readable form. An AI that finds “Monaco” in one place and “Beausoleil” in another, or two different trading names, hesitates to recommend you.
  3. Real English content. If your English pages are a patchy machine translation, the AI has little to quote. Other languages (Italian, Russian…) are worth it case by case, depending on your actual clientele.

I explain the general mechanics in why your business doesn’t appear in ChatGPT. To find out where you stand, the guide to measuring your AI visibility gives a simple method with test prompts.

Banking and finance: what constraints apply to content?

Financial firms have one more constraint. In Monaco, the marketing and canvassing of financial services and products is reserved for companies authorised by the CCAF (Commission de Contrôle des Activités Financières), under article 29 of Law No. 1.338 on financial activities, amended in 2021 and again in 2022. For a private bank or an asset manager, I have service pages, articles and campaigns checked by compliance before publication, and I write factual content with no promise of returns.

An example: Royal Yacht International

Royal Yacht International is a Monaco-based broker working in superyacht charter, sales, management and new builds, with offices from London to Dubai and Miami. I redesigned its visual identity, designed and built its WordPress site and laid SEO foundations for an international audience. Its clients search in English from several continents, and the consistency of the brand wherever it is mentioned counts for more than the address.

Where should you start with SEO in Monaco?

This is the order I follow on an SEO project in Monaco:

  1. Check the real address and the Google profile (Monaco or a neighbouring town), fix the name and categories.
  2. Choose the domain and the language structure (fr, en, x-default), then check the hreflang tags.
  3. Write English pages for the queries that matter, on a calendar built around the Grand Prix or the Monaco Yacht Show if your business depends on them.
  4. Align the entity: same name, same address, structured data, up-to-date third-party profiles.
  5. Earn mentions in sector sources, then test ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answers regularly.

My offers (audit and monthly follow-up) are detailed on the SEO & GEO page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO for a Monaco business cost?

With me, the Google + AI visibility audit costs €390 and monthly SEO/GEO follow-up costs €490 a month. The rest of the budget depends mainly on the number of languages and the competition on your English queries.

Can a Beausoleil company appear in “Monaco” searches?

Yes, for nearby searches, since Google takes the searcher’s location into account. Its profile must keep its real Beausoleil address and its real name, without “Monaco” added.

Should you translate your site into Russian or Italian?

Not by default. In the projects I see, English is enough for most foreign clients. An Italian or Russian version is worth it if a real share of your clients or enquiries comes from those markets, and if you can reply in that language.

Do you need an SEO consultant based in Monaco?

No. What matters is knowing the market and its rules. I’m based in Nice, about twenty minutes away by train, and I work with Riviera clients as well as remotely across France.
